We have finally moved in!
After 14 months of construction, we have finally moved in! Only half of our somewhat special house is finished. But we are enjoying our own bed to the full and sleeping like sloths. The last month has been very busy on the building site. So you haven't heard much from us in the last few weeks. This is about to change!

A stroke of luck
On our last visit to the beach in the Baya Ballena marine reserve, the ranger on duty watched a monkey hit our rear-view mirror with a coconut. What a precise shot! We were lucky that no more damage was done to the car and that we were able to get a brand new replacement for just USD 160 at the Suzuki garage in the regional capital just a week later. In Switzerland you would pay a multiple of that! ¡Pura vida!

Repair after small land slide
This morning the coffee farmers and gardeners Manuel and Dagoberto and I repaired a small landslide. During a heavy rain soil had slipped down under the geotextile. It was good to be hands on again! On the one hand it was a change from the project work for Europe (drug development and mediations). And on the other hand, we once again appreciate the dedication of our construction workers, who work up to 10 hours in humid 32 degrees. Patrik

No shower tonight?
Due to a leak in the water pipe supplying our construction site I had to reschedule my office day. As the water provider had no time repairing the leak the very day & thus stopped the water, I drove down the hill to the Ferreteria "la Jungla" (hardware store) to get the replacement pieces. In the meantime three of our workers have been preparing the ground (see pic). All 12 workers staying on site during the week were happy to get their shower and that the cook was able to prepare dinner. Patrik

3 jungle essentials
The 3 basics for living in the jungle. Water: just two months after having purchased our lot, we were lucky that a local team found water by digging an artesian well. Electricity: is already available at the entrance gate. And we also plan to install solar panels to be independent from regular short break downs. Communication: and then we are happy that the neighbourhood has recently been connected with fibre optic cables. So no problem to keep in touch and to work in the "Jungle Office"!

Cat- and house sitting in Uvita
Where does one stay when building a house? Renting a reasonable house in Costa Rica is pretty expensive mainly due to the American tourists. So we were lucky that first we could stay at Katharina's place, in her "honey moon suite" which was fun: living in the middle of a jungle garden with just the bed and the bathroom behind mosquito screens. Now we are cat- and house sitting at the house of our future neighbours. As they travel they are happy that we look after Mowgli and Shanti. PURA VIDA!

Building a house in the jungle
The adventure of building a house in the Southern jungle of Costa Rica started with a vision ... During our travel across Costa Rica back in 2019 we fell in love with the people, the nature and wildlife, the way of life. We never had the intention to buy land in this wonderful country, but then the land found us. The vision of a life in pure nature, open to the elements with a design which facilitates natural ventilation and truly open living spaces is unfolding now.
